Springsteen to continue Seeger Sessions tour into the fall

Larry Eagle got a nice jolt of job security - on a pretty cool job - last month in Milan, Italy.
As the drummer for Bruce Springsteen's Seeger Sessions Band, Eagle had been on the road with the "Boss" for three weeks, performing material from the rocker's recent record of vintage folk and Americana, "We Shall Overcome." It had been a venture into the unknown for Eagle and his 16 fellow players; nothing had been certain but that the ad hoc band would perform through June.
"We were onstage when Bruce said something at the end of the show, in Italian, and the audience went crazy," Eagle recalls. "The rest of us looked at each other in confusion, and he translated it for us: `We'll be back in the fall.' That's when we knew this tour would continue, and we're just enjoying it every day as we go along."
For Eagle, it was the latest in a series of surprises from Springsteen. "We Shall Overcome," featuring performances of songs popularized by folk hero Pete Seeger, had itself started as a set of loose jam sessions at Springsteen's New Jersey studio late last year. The material was pegged for release as a proper album only after a second session in January produced another batch of fruitful results. Eagle and the other studio participants were invited aboard for a run of touring that would kick off in April in the vaunted Springsteen territory of Asbury Park, N.J.
As Springsteen rolls into a third month of touring, "We Shall Overcome" stands as something of a stealth triumph for the 56-year-old musician. The album's rousing, organic renditions of American standards and activist anthems - "John Henry," "Eyes on the Prize," "Old Dan Trucker"_ seem to have won over die-hard fans who were initially skeptical about Springsteen's latest musical maneuver.
At the heart of the Seeger Sessions Band is violinist Soozie Tyrell, a longtime Springsteen compatriot who helped round up many of the participating musicians. Those include Eagle, whose Cajun-zydeco band the Gotham Playboys was recruited by Tyrell to play Springsteen's birthday party in September 1997. That job turned into a three-hour jam and an invitation to join a recording session the next month, where the rocker was cutting a track for a Seeger tribute album.
Unknown to anyone at the time, it was the genesis of this year's Seeger project.
"When he called us last year in the late winter to come in and record some more, we really had no idea but that it was an extension of what we'd done in `97 - some recording for fun, exercise, aesthetic expansion on his part," Eagle says.
Springsteen may be famous - and infamous - as one of rock's great perfectionists, but the Seeger Sessions tracks reflected a new kind of approach for the meticulous craftsman. Eagle points out that "we spent less time recording this entire album than he spent recording the one song `Born to Run.' It's a warts and all kind of project.
"It's a complete, 180-degree reverse," Eagle continues. "Bruce has said on occasion recently, `It's an artist's responsibility to build a box then find a way to climb out of it.' This project is emblematic of that. He's been very willing to lead very subtly and allow for the possibility, or even probability, of something between a mistake and a happy accident."
On the road this spring and summer with his sprawling band, Springsteen has seemed determined to maintain the looseness of the winter studio efforts. Eagle laughs.
"There's hasn't been a day onstage with Bruce that isn't fraught with surprise," he says. "He's throwing songs at us that we haven't rehearsed for more than a month or new changes at the last second. He's an amazing orchestral conductor - if that's what he wanted to be, he's got the knack for it.
"I think the audience responds to that, too, because it's a bit of a high-wire act."
Eagle says he's having the time of his life, traveling with what he describes as an amiable and accessible Springsteen backstage, traipsing a broad field of musical styles out front. As drummer, he plays a pivotal role in steering the band.
"It's about feeding a lot off of Bruce's interests and his desire to cover a lot of geographical ground," Eagle says. "In one song alone, a rather serious revision of his song `Ramrod,' we embrace the music of the Caribbean, conjunto music from Mexico and sort of an Eastern European polka all at the same time. In one song, we can cover 6,000 miles of ethnic and regional styles."
That revamping of 1980's "Ramrod" is one of several Springsteen chestnuts that grace the set list, bracketing the Seeger work while making musical and thematic connections between the material. For audiences, Eagle says, it's been sheer delight.
"The look in their faces - it's as if you put an electric shock into them," he says, laughing. "Especially the ones who are Bruce diehards, when they hear the beginning of a song they know, but don't know they know it yet. Then `Johnny 99' or `Atlantic City' will get into their heads, and the reactions are amazing - they stand or sit upright, and the smiles just stream across their faces.". -

Bruce Springsteen just recently finished a European tour which saw him play the Point on the 5th May to a sell out audience. The concert which received rave reviews, was nothing short of transcendent and only served to widen his already brimming fan base in Ireland and enhance an already honourable reputation.
The concert will feature music from ‘The Bosses’ 21st studio album 'We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions’ which was released on the 25th April and debuted at No.1 in the Pan European Chart. The album is a fitting tribute to Peter Seeger, the legendary guiding light of folk music and tireless activist for the labour, civil rights, anti –war and environmental issues.
The 17 member Seeger Sessions Band will comprise of the following line up: Sam Bardfeld (Violin), Art Baron (Tuba), Frank Bruno (Guitar), Jeremy Chatzky (Upright Bass), Larry Eagle (Drums), Clark Gayton (Trombone), Charles Giordano (Accordion, Keyboards), Curtis King (Vocals), Greg Liszt (Banjo), Lisa Lowell (Vocals), Eddie Manion (Sax), Cindy Mizell (Vocals), Curt Ramm (Trumpet), Marty Rifkin (Pedal Steel Guitar), Patti Scialfa (Vocals), Mark Thompson (Vocals) and Soozie Tyrell (Violin). All will accompany Bruce Springsteen on Vocals, Guitar and Harmonica.
Bruce Springsteen & The Seeger Sessions Band live at the Point Friday 17th November and Saturday 18th November 2006 and the Odyssey Arena Belfast on the 21st November. E io vi ringrazio... purtroppo come avrete potuto leggere dal forum di loose ends... non rimane appunto che solo la speranza e solo questo sentimento non mi fa dire che il Boss a Pistoia non verrà...
Come avete potuto notare c'è un pistoiese DOC pluriconcertato del BOSS 21 gli show visti in tutto, super attento alle news... questo credetemi ve lo posso assicurare perchè lo conosco, con fabri64 ci siamo sentiti per telefono e siamo sempre in contatto e se c'è qualcuno a Pistoia che può avere notizie di ogni genere sul Boss in anteprima è proprio lui... ha dato la notizia del concerto di Dublino, prima di tutti e son sicuro che ha pure che a questo giro aspettato la certezza prima di darla...
Per quanto riguarda Pistoia vi posso solo amaramente assicurare che ci siamo andati vicini ma tanto vicini e che purtroppo la mia città ha perso un occasione d'oro "forse" irripetibile, biscottini o zuccherini, promesse poi magari non mantenute, fughe di notizie a personaggi sbagliati, oramai non contano più... e a meno che il Boss in persona non dica "I want to Play in Pistoia!" il concerto non si farà...
Questo è tutto in questi giorni sono un pò sgonfio e seguo poco e dico ... "tanto c'è fabri" però vi ho risposto volentieri....
...ovviamente non mancherò di farlo per eventuali NEWS...
P.S. la locandina ...dell'annuncio del Boss a PT non la brucio... per ora... non si sa mai

Posso dire la mia ?
Premesso il Bruce lo andremmo a vedere in concerto pure se dovesse cantare le canzoni dello Zecchino d'oro, io avrei preferito un bel classico con la E-street prima che se ne vadano in pensione definitivamente piuttosto che il country-folk-bluegrass che ho già visto. Poi va bene tutto, pur di averlo materializzato su un palco a pochi metri da me
anche se temo che dovrò saltare se davvero si parla di novembre inoltrato.

ringrazio pinolino e LSM... ma qui non conta chi arriva primo a dar la notizia . Credo che siamo qui tutti insieme per un comune denominatore...non significano i concerti visti o i bootleg sullo scaffale .......beh ora basta troppo melenzo , prepariamoci per l'autunno e mano al portafoglio. Comunque se vi interessa ho una discreta collezione di articoli dall'84/85 ad oggi (italiani) su Bruce. . -

Non p che l'abbiamo "data la notiza", è che anche loro guardan in giro e ci leggono, siamo in contatto tra tutti i forums e fans e quacuno si è sentito di confermare PISTOIA anche se apparentemente ....

Ma PISTOIA era una ipoetsi che sembra abbandonata, credo... però
los amigos desse SPAIN/Pointblank saben que PISTOIA en Octubre estuvia una "possibilidad" que nosotros discutemos ('' incorrecto? male, male..) aqui en el forum de MILANO 1985-2003 en Junio, mas haora parese "desaparecida", claro que qualquier nueva noticia desde ITALIA en futuro (esperamos confirmaciones la proxima semana) serà (como se dice en castillano?) ..dai cugini TRAVELINFANS qui di fianco c'è scritto anche FIRENZE - 3 ottobre..... non so la fonte.... tutte le date resterebbero ufficiose per ora......... fino a che SONY si sveglia..... a breve!!!
